1977 was a watershed year for the Ford F150 as it became the nation’s best-selling truck, a title it has never relinquished. This fully restored 4x4 Ranger short box helps demonstrate how this happened almost 50 years ago and why these trucks continue to be so popular today. It has a fantastic look with countless new parts and loads of great features including a 400ci V8 and cold air conditioning, along with a ride that is better than you might expect.
Sold new in Colorado, this is a genuine F14 short box with the Ranger trim package and four wheel drive. A copy of the Marti report is included. The restoration of this solid, rust-free pickup was completed in 2019. Its body was refinished and dechromed to create the stunning look you see today, while the entire frame was sandblasted and powder coated. The gray metallic paint and black trim are enhanced by the tinted windows and round aftermarket headlights. The truck is lifted four inches and rolls on 17” Fuel wheels with 33 x 12.5” General Grabber X3 tires, giving both an aggressive look and great off-road capability. Note the nerf bars for easier access too.
Power comes from the rebuilt 400ci V8 with a 0.010” overbore. Originally a 2-barrel setup, it was modified with an Edelbrock aluminum intake manifold and 4-barrel carburetor with electric choke. You will also find an aluminum radiator with dual electric fans plus a Flowmaster dual exhaust with a great sound. The engine is backed by a rebuilt C4 automatic transmission which feeds the dual range transfer case and 4.11 axles with Warn locking hubs in front. The suspension utilizes a 4-inch radius arm lift kit, while the power steering includes dual Rough Country stabilizers for those off-road moments. Brakes are power front discs.
The original red vinyl interior was completely redone in gray and black. New cab insulation was also installed. There is a column shifter for the automatic transmission and a floor mounted unit for the transfer case. The original gauges and steering wheel were retained and still look great, while a small tachometer was added to the steering column. A must-have these days is the cold air conditioning which has been converted to R134a refrigerant. Other working features include the headlights, dash lights, courtesy lights, turn signals, hazards, wipers, washers, heater, defroster, AM/FM radio, horn, parking brake. Even the glove box and parking brake lights work. How many vintage pickups can match this functionality?
The classic truck market keeps getting better and has plenty to offer. This F150 makes a strong case to collectors and enthusiasts alike; factory 117” wheelbase, four wheel drive, 400ci engine, power steering, and air conditioning wrapped up in the Ranger package. The comprehensive restoration and resulting ride quality wraps it all up in a great package for the next owner.
