You don’t see these every day! This 1950 Chevrolet Fleetline Deluxe was the subject of a body-off restoration completed in 2012. Along with any required repairs, this project included loads of upgrades like a 406 ci V8 engine, power rack and pinion steering, power 4-wheel disc brakes, and Vintage Air a/c. The result is a great looking and driving Chevy that is ready to be enjoyed and includes some nice documentation as well.
The “torpedo back” design is hard to beat, especially in 2-door form. Note the split windshield, Deluxe trim, and optional bird hood ornament. This example was built in September of 1950 and promptly sold on 9-15-50 by Brand Chevrolet in Waynesboro, VA. Restoration work included media blasting and repainting the entire body and frame. New floors were installed and the chassis was modified for the mechanical upgrades. The entire body was repainted in Khaki Green and all chrome parts were replated. New 15” Rocket Racing Igniter wheels were fitted for a slick updated look with or without the fender skirts. Tires are 215/70 front and 225/70 rear with 2019 date codes.
The engine is a Chevrolet 406 cubic inch small block that was done for this car. It is a mild street build that provides a huge upgrade over the factory 235ci straight six! Highlights include a 4-barrel carburetor with electric choke, aluminum intake manifold, HEI distributor, and serpentine belt system. The dual exhaust uses headers along with Flowmaster mufflers. Cooling is provided by a large Be Cool radiator with electric fan. The transmission is a TH350 automatic which feeds a Ford 9” limited slip rear end.
Additional mechanical improvements include a Mustang II style front suspension and power steering rack. Power brakes were also installed with discs all around for better performance. KYB Gas-A-Just shocks were also installed front and rear. The fuel system uses a custom baffled fuel cell along with an electric fuel pump. Finally, the battery has been relocated to the trunk and includes a disconnect switch.
The interior was completely redone as well. The metal surfaces share the body color while the seats, doors, and headliner were finished in in period looking gray fabric. Seat belts were also added front and rear. The dashboard retains a stock look with the exception of the Vintage Air controls. Note all the factory gauges work as they should. Power windows were added and the old vacuum wipers were replaced with an electric unit for more reliable operation. In addition, the old AM radio was modified for FM reception.
There are a few other items of interest on this Fleetline. First, it comes with some wonderful documentation from 1950 including the original invoice showing a price of $1,727.50. There is also the original service policy, loan documents, and title (it is presently on a WI title). In addition, this car has some celebrity ownership history and related signatures as seen on the dashboard and right door.
This is a pretty special car. Not only is this a model you don’t often see, but it is very well preserved thanks to all the restoration work. You also get a load of practical performance upgrades and driver conveniences as well. It is all wrapped up in a classic Chevy design with a few tasteful updates that gives a refreshing break from all the usual Tri-Fives on the market.
