This 1962 Impala SS has a lot to offer.  To begin, this is a real black-over-red Impala SS; no color changes or fake badging here.  It underwent a refurbishment in 2010 with further updates in 2024-25.  It wears a number of period modifications from the 1960’s and is powered by a fresh dual-quad 327.  Modern updates include an overdrive transmission, front disc brakes, power steering, and Vintage Air a/c.  And while some of these classics move around frequently, this Impala spent more than 50 years with its second owner.

After decades of service this Chevrolet received a major refurbishment in 2010.  This included replacing the floor pans, trunk pans, and some cross bracing.  It was also repainted its original Tuxedo Black with four coats of clear.  In 2024 the car was further updated with new bumpers along with a new grille, tail panel, and emblems.  There is also a second hood with an AF/X style teardrop scoop that is painted to match – very cool!  The outer headlights were converted to cold air intakes for a great vintage race look.  Note this can be easily be changed back to stock as nothing was cut.  Wheels are 15” American Racing pieces with Cooper Cobra tires (235/60 front, 245/60 rear).

The 327ci engine received a professional rebuild by Dick Skarlupka in 2019 with approximately 4,000 miles since.  The 3782870 block was bored 0.060” while the crankshaft was turned 0.010”/0.010”.  It was fitted with 10.5:1 pistons to give healthy compression but still work with pump gas.  The rotating assembly was balanced to 9,000 rpm for smooth operation.  The valvetrain was fitted with hydraulic lifters and roller rockers, and the double-hump cylinder heads received hardened valve seats.  Up top is a vintage Edelbrock X-C8 intake topped by dual Holley carburetors and cold air intakes.  Such a great period setup!  There is also a 4-core radiator and headers feeing a dual exhaust with cutout plates.

The transmission was upgraded from the original 2-speed Powerglide to a 4-speed 200R4 automatic overdrive unit with locking torque converter for nice highway cruising.  The driveshaft was rebuilt and a new center support bearing installed.  The Positraction rear end was also rebuilt with new bearings and seals.  Steering effort was greatly improved with a Borgeson power steering setup.  Additional work was performed on the front and rear suspensions along with the steering components, and the braking system was upgraded to front discs with a dual reservoir master cylinder.

The red vinyl interior was also updated.  The bucket seats were redone with new foam and upholstery, while front and rear seat belts were installed.  The door panels and carpet were replaced too.  A complete Vintage Air heat / defrost / air conditioning system was installed in 2025 along with a trio of underdash gauges.  All the lighting works properly including the headlights, running lights, brake lights, turn signals, backup lights, dash lights, and courtesy lights.  The horn, wipers, heater, and parking brake are functional as is the aftermarket digital radio.  A spare tire and bumper jack reside in the cavernous trunk.

As mentioned, this is a real-deal Impala SS in its original colors.  The factory cowl tag is present and calls out a code 900 Tuxedo Black exterior with a code 875 red vinyl bucket seat interior.  In addition, this is a Janesville-built car from November 1961 with a -12H suffix on the trim code which was that plant’s SS callout until December 1961.  The car just oozes character.  It is a beautiful, solid example with a great blend of vintage modifications and modern updates.  And with all the recent work it is ready to go for its next owner.
