The Toyota Land Cruiser has proven to be a very popular classic SUV. And while there seem to be plenty of short wheelbase FJ40 models out there, you don’t often see the long wheelbase FJ45 “Troopy” versions like this one. It retains the classic Land Cruiser lines while offering seating for eleven (!) with a very spacious rear compartment. This body-off restored 1983 model is one of the nicer such examples on the market.
Restored in 2023 and showing 280 miles since, this Land Cruiser hails from Saudi Arabia where it obviously wasn’t exposed to snow or salt. This makes for a solid body and frame despite being almost 40 years old. Be sure to see the underside shots in the gallery. The body was repainted in green with a white top while the steel wheels were fitted with 7.50-16LT tires. Other features include bumper mounted fog lights and a spare fuel tank on the rear swing arm. Note the Saudi Arabia license plate and 2023 inspection sticker remain in place.
The Toyota 2F-series 4.2L engine is all stock and runs perfectly. This 6-cylinder platform is a hallmark of Toyota and favors durability over high speed, making it a great fit for this type of vehicle. Note it is not equipped with a catalytic converter. The balance of the factory drivetrain includes a 4-speed manual transmission along with a 2-speed transfer case. The front hubs use drive flanges while the rear axle is a full floating setup – this was designed to be a heavy duty vehicle! Other equipment includes power steering and power brakes.
The interior is in excellent condition as well. The front seats have been recovered along with all the rear jump seats. Note there are no seatbelts or heater on this Saudi unit. All floor surfaces have been lined with plastic covered carpet, and the replacement door panels still have their protective wrap in place. Everything is stock with the exception of an aftermarket digital radio. The dashboard and steering wheel all look great while the instrument cluster is fully reconditioned. All lights work as do the turn signals, wipers, and horn.
The classic 4x4 market can be a lot of fun, especially when you’ve got something different. This Troopy certainly qualifies in that regard. It will draw a crowd wherever it goes as you rarely see this model in the United States (especially in this condition). Still, there is no mistaking this as anything but a Land Cruiser, meaning it is both a capable and desirable classic SUV.
