This 1964 Pontiac Catalina is a great statement to what made the brand so popular over the years. As a member of Pontiac’s full-size lineup, it has generous proportions that rival all but the largest cars of the era. Despite that, it retains a sporty look in its hardtop form with crisp lines that are unmistakably Pontiac. Mix that in with this example’s tri-power V8 and 5-speed manual transmission and you’ve got all kinds of Pontiac excitement.
Built in December 1963, this Catalina received a high quality repaint in its original code V Grenadier Red. It was also adorned with 2+2 and Hurst badging for some extra flair. Panels are nice and straight down the sides without any waviness. The floors and frame are also solid without any rust issues. A patch is noted where a vertical gate shifter used to reside – not uncommon for a Catalina. This Pontiac also has their classic 8-lug wheels wearing BF Goodrich redline tires from 2023.
Under the hood sits Pontiac’s 389 cubic inch Trophy V8 engine which has been upgraded to a tri-power induction setup for a little more fun. The original 4-speed transmission was changed out in favor of a Tremec 5-speed for better highway cruising. This is followed by Pontiac’s robust 9.3” Safe-T-Trac rear end. Other features include an aftermarket aluminum radiator and a set of custom headers feeding a new Magnaflow dual exhaust. Factory power steering and power brakes are also present and essential on such a big car.
The black interior features recovered bucket seats along with a matching rear bench. The door panels, carpet, and headliner are all in nice shape too. The dashboard is classic Pontiac with a sweep speedometer flanked by battery and fuel gauges. A Sunpro tachometer has been added at the left, while the center dash contains factory gauges for oil pressure and water temperature. Note the headlights, dash lights, dome light, backup lights, turn signals, wipers, washers, horn, lighter, and parking brake all work properly. The trunk includes a spare tire, bumper jack, and extending utility light.
This car includes its PHS documents which specify how the car was originally built by Pontiac. Also, be sure to measure your garage as this car is deceptively large, exceeding the 1964 Impala in both length and width. Total length is about 214 inches (just shy of 18 feet).
The Catalina platform was well known for performance and ushered in some of the most famous Pontiacs of all time including a 421 SD version that sold for almost $750k last year. While this one does not present that level of rarity, it remains a gorgeous and desirable model that is fun to drive and ready to go.
