Here is a real-deal 1979 Camaro Z28 4-speed.  This second-generation version represents a design that has really aged well and is much more refined than earlier Camaros.  It has a great look with its Bright Blue paint and Z28 styling.  And with a new 345hp crate engine and factory 4-speed transmission, it is also a load of fun to drive.

This is a genuine Los Angeles-built Z28 with its original trim tag displaying the correct “8” code.    The car has been repainted in its original code 24 Bright Blue paint and also received new Z28 graphics.   Other recent work includes replacement of the radiator support (a common issue on these cars) and the fuel tank.  The factory front air dam and fender flares give the car a more aggressive look along with the faux side fender ports and hood scoop.  There is also a 3-piece rear spoiler and body colored 15” wheels with new Cooper Cobra tires.

Under the hood is a new ATK 350ci crate engine rated at 345 hp and 400 ft-lbs of torque – a huge improvement over the factory 175 hp setup!  Note the original numbers-matching engine is also included.  The new setup features a 4-bolt main block, Hypereutectic pistons, and roller cam.  It is a great street setup that is not over-the-top and still produces good vacuum.  It also includes a 3-year manufacturer warranty.  Other equipment includes a new dual exhaust with ceramic coated headers and without catalytic converters.

The engine is backed by the car’s numbers-matching Super T10 4-speed transmission which represents only about 10% of production for the 1979 model year.  The rear end has been changed to a highway-friendly 2.73 ratio with Positraction.  Other factory equipment includes the F41 sport suspension along with power steering and power front disc brakes.

The blue cloth interior retains a stock Z28 appearance throughout with the exception of a Clarion in-dash AM/FM/cassette player which looks right at home in a 1970’s muscle car.  Bucket seats flank the floor shifter which still has a functional reverse lockout and backdrive (must be in reverse to remove the key).  A new molded carpet was just installed too.  Note the correct rope steering wheel with Z28 horn button.  The gauges, headlights, tail lights, brake lights, backup lights, and turn signals are all functional.  Same with the horn, radio, wipers, heater / defroster, and parking brake.  Finally, the trunk includes the original jack and space saver spare with CO2 canister!

Camaros have always been popular with collectors and enthusiasts alike.  And while first generation Z28 models have pushed well beyond the $100,000 mark, the second-generation cars cost far less while offering a much more refined platform.  This example captures the spirit of the era but with more power and a 4-speed, providing an exhilarating ride as you shift through the gears and throwback to 1979.
