The 1978 Lincoln Continental Mark V represents the end of an era, when enormous land yachts were still being produced with ever-increasing proportions and luxury. And at nearly twenty feet in length this desirable 1978 Diamond Jubilee edition delivers in both regards. It is an enormous car that dwarfs most anything on the road and has the cushy soft ride you would expect from such a mammoth automobile.
Built for only three years (1977-1979), the Mark V was one of the last big cars produced by Detroit. In 1978 they released the special Diamond Jubilee edition to honor Ford’s 75th anniversary. This version was a pretty big deal, adding a whopping $8,000 to the model’s already-steep $13,000 base price. That made it more than $100,000 in today’s money and kept production to about 5,000 of the 72,000 Mark V’s that year.
This Lincoln is mostly original and very nice overall with just some localized aging in the paint and vinyl top. It is a solid car as well without any major rust problems (note the old rustproofing plugs in the door jambs). The body is finished in Jubilee Gold Moondust, one of two exclusive colors for this edition and very fitting for the car. Diamond Jubilee features worth noting include factory pinstriping, color matched moldings, unique hood ornament, etched opera windows, and special trunk lid. Note too the stately chrome grille, functional fender vents, and optional sunroof. The body colored 15” turbine wheels wear brand new 235/75 whitewall tires.
Power for this big Lincoln is from a 400 cubic inch Cleveland V8. These larger engines were also nearing extinction in the late 70’s, but this one remains a nice running example. It is quiet and smooth on the road and very fitting of the brand. Note the smog pump is present but not operational. Behind the engine is a C6 automatic transmission followed by a 9” rear end with 2.75 highway gears. The power steering has plenty of boost as do the power brakes. And the ride is oh-so-soft!
Like the exterior, the Diamond Jubilee interior received special treatment starting with cloth bucket seats in front instead of a split bench. A center console with padded armrest and integrated umbrella (!) was also part of the package along with leather trim throughout. Everything is in remarkable condition for a car nearing 50 years of age. Just look at those seats! There are plenty of power features: front seats, door locks, sunroof, and windows with unique vent sections. You will also find a tilt column, cruise control, auto dimming headlights, digital range display, and a special Cartier clock. The AM/FM/8-track sound system still works too. This one is further equipped with automatic temperature control though the a/c portion does not work. In the trunk you will find the special Diamond Jubilee leather wrapped tool kit along with the spare and jack. Finally, a vintage Lincoln garage door opener is also included.
You might think a vehicle that is more than 230” long with a GVWR of 6,387 pounds would be a crew cab pickup, but in the 1970’s it was a Lincoln Mark V coupe. Make no mistake, this one is a real throwback. But there is nothing like sitting in the driver’s seat as you look down that long expanse of fenders and hood and float down the road.
