The C4 Corvette ZR1 set the world on fire. It was a huge leap beyond any previous offering and was truly “King Of The Hill” with a sticker price more than twice that of a base Corvette. But aside from a monster MSRP, this car brought some serious performance to the C4 model including an incredible 24-hour endurance run averaging over 175 mph. Impressive indeed, even today. This 1991 model presents a strong case as one of the more collectible examples you will find with its great condition, low miles, and original documentation.
This one is a true collector’s piece with only 13,000 miles since new. It is a two-owner vehicle that was not titled until 2012 (a copy of the MSO is included). The original window sticker (not a reproduction) shows a list price of $65,338 – more than $150k in today’s dollars. The black finish is less common than the more usual Bright Red and has proven to be a very desirable Corvette color for collectors. You also get the standard ZR1 design cues include wider bodywork, squared off taillights, 11” rear wheels, and ZR1 badging. Everything is stock except for the tires and battery.
The highlight of the ZR1 is its remarkable LT5 alloy motor. Designed in collaboration with Lotus and hand built by Mercury Marine, this 5.7L masterpiece was rated at 375 hp (a 50% increase over the base Corvette). The DOHC design with four valves per cylinder represented Corvette firsts. Its outstanding performance has been well documented as has its longevity. The balance of the drivetrain consists of the smooth 6-speed ZF transmission and 3.45 Dana Super 44 limited slip rear end.
The interior is done in black leather and is in excellent condition. All the standard 1991 ZR1 features are present including dual power seats, Delco Bose Gold Series stereo, electronic air conditioning, and selective ride control. Of course, there is also the valet key to switch engine power between “Normal” and “Full”. This car is further equipped with the optional translucent roof panel.
Additional items included with this car include the “pizza box” which was only offered for the 1990-91 model years and can be very hard to find. This was a distinctive cardboard box that contained special ZR1 literature and a VHS tape. Also included is the unique ZR1 spare tire bag, original owner’s manuals, a copy of the MSO, miscellaneous paperwork, a clean Carfax report, and a showboard with stand.
This is not only an outstanding and desirable Corvette, but it also has many of the attributes for good investment potential: low miles, clean history, desirable documentation, and all the performance benchmarks established by the ZR1. It is also a Corvette to watch as the 2025 ZR1 approaches. It all adds up to a great package for any potential ZR1 buyer looking for something special.
