The one that started it all!  Most people know about the Ford Model T and how it revolutionized not only the assembly process but also the country itself.  It remains one of the best-selling vehicles of all time with more than 15 million produced from 1908-1927.  However, 100 years later you sometimes wonder where they all went.  Well we can account for one of them, and it is more than just an inanimate piece of history.

This 1923 pickup is a delightful example of a running and driving Model T.  It has been through multiple restorations / refurbishments over its lifetime, and after a full century it remains a very attractive and properly running Lizzie.  Starting life as a Runabout, it was converted to a Syverson pickup bed in the late 1980’s (the original trunk section is included).  The steel body is solid throughout and does not show any signs of trauma or rust.  Same with the underside and floors.  The black convertible top is in very good condition as well.  The wooden wheels wear 30 x 3-1/2” Firestone tires while two spares are secured to the left running board.  Note this “T” wears an Iowa state-assigned VIN with a proper title calling out a 1923 Ford.

The 4-cylinder engine appears original and has an appropriate serial number for September 1923 (8,376,226).  The 6V electric starter turns the engine over easily, though the hand crank is there too if you want to go that route.  It starts as easily as any Model T we’ve ever had, without any clouds of smoke or eye-watering fumes.  The two forward gears and single reverse gear all operate as they should as does the brake pedal.  It all makes for a fully operational 1923 that will get on down the road.

Looking inside reveals a standard Model T interior with a black padded bench seat and rubber floor covering.  As a factory roadster, the body has a single door on the right side.  It also has a pivoting upper windshield section.  The steering column has the usual levers for spark advance and throttle along with a horn button.  The electric headlights work properly as does the ammeter and the single taillight.

Despite huge production numbers, there really aren’t many Model T’s as nice and as functional as this example.  When is the last time you saw one of these at a car show, much less on the road?  There is nothing quite like driving one of these automobiles as you lift the pedal into high gear and imagine what a thrill this must have been 100 years ago.
