This 1967 Corvette is an outstanding collectible. For starters, this beautiful car has been with the same enthusiast owner for the last 32 years, receiving excellent care along the way. Further, it is also a rare 427ci 400hp tri-power car with its original, numbers-matching engine and 4-speed transmission. It has lots of niceties including side exhaust, power steering, and the original warranty book / Protect-O-Plate. And it has seen plenty of work and proper maintenance over the years, making for a truly turn-key car that could be driven anywhere right now.
As a 1967 this Corvette represents the final and most popular year of the C2 generation. The lines are design perfection, especially with that big block hood. Both the NCRS shipping report and the trim tag show a production date of 4-3-67 for this car. It has seen one repaint in its original code 986 Silver Pearl, which despite being more than 30 years old is holding up very well. The Soft-Ray tinted glass appears all original with date codes ranging from January-March 1967 and is in remarkable condition. The frame and birdcage appear solid throughout, while the black convertible top has been replaced and looks great. The Rally wheels wear BF Goodrich redline tires with 2022 date codes. A front license plate frame is also included.
The engine compartment is a beautiful sight as well. It features the number-matching L68 427ci 400hp engine. With three carburetors and hydraulic lifters this was one of the rarest engines that year, even moreso than its solid-lifter L71 cousin. This one was completely rebuilt in 1992 with 17k miles since. As the receipts show, the rebuilder was given specific instructions for the block which state, “No surfacing, retain correct numbers.” Thus the pad still shows the factory JC suffix code and VIN derivative. For reference, the engine block is a 3904351 part with a casting date of 2-23-67 and an assembly date of 3-15-67. But beyond all these numbers and dates is an impressive engine that starts easily, has a steady idle, and really delivers the power.
Behind the engine is the numbers-matching Muncie 4-speed which was rebuilt in 2004. It shows a date stamping of 3-3-67 and also has the matching VIN derivative in the proper location. Shifts are smooth and easy throughout the rpm range. The rear end is a 3.55 ratio heavy duty Positraction unit with the correct half-shaft caps. Note this car was converted to power steering in 2008 for easier driving. The factory 4-wheel disc brakes remain manual and are in perfect operating condition.
The black interior provides the perfect contrast to the silver exterior, especially with the top down. The seats have been reupholstered in leather and the door panels have been replaced. The dashboard and instrument cluster look terrific with clear lenses and nice bezels. All gauges work properly as do the wipers, horn, heater/defroster, backup lights, interior lights, turn signals, and parking brake. Even the clock and glove box light work. The headlight motors operate smoothly as well. This Corvette is also equipped with an AM/FM radio and power windows.
Mid-year Corvettes continue to be the most desirable of them all. This example stands out further with its many great attributes. But along with the long-term ownership and numbers-matching L68 4-speed drivetrain, this one is also a pleasure to drive and really delivers on the Corvette experience. Just drop the top, fire up that big block, and listen to that side exhaust roar.
