This 1964 Galaxie 500XL represents a great period in Ford’s history. Of course, the Galaxie was a huge hit with millions produced throughout the 1960’s. But this model was more than just a sales victory. It also saw tremendous success at the track, dominating NASCAR throughout the decade while lightweight drag versions had their way at the strip. It’s all a great backdrop for this 428ci 4-speed car equipped with power steering and brakes along with new paint on a rust-free California body.
This Galaxie is a 4-owner car that was built in Los Angeles and spent most of its life in California. This is as solid a car as you will find; look at the underside pictures and you’ll see the frame, floor pans, and body mounts are all in amazing condition. In the last two years the body received a full repaint in its original Wimbledon White along with many new chrome pieces, rubber seals, and more. It also received a new set of Torq Thrust style wheels with Cooper Cobra tires. An extra set of white steelies with tires is also included along with a Thunderbolt style fiberglass hood.
Three years ago its owner decided the original 352ci big-block was not getting the job done, so it was replaced with a rebuilt 428 that is much more capable. The block received an overbore along with 9.5:1 pistons for good street performance. Up top is a Holley Street Dominator aluminum intake with a 750 cfm 4-barrel carburetor. There is also an MSD ignition, electric fuel pump, and a big Canton Racing oil pan. An aluminum radiator with electric fan keeps things cool. And check out the rare Ford cast iron headers!
Along with the engine swap, the original automatic transmission was replaced with a 4-speed Toploader along with a Hurst shifter and correct matching console plate. A Centerforce clutch and aluminum flywheel were also installed. The limited slip 9” rear end has new 3.25 gears for good highway performance. A new Borgeson power steering box was also installed as were power front disc brakes. The car also has new springs all around.
The two-tone turquoise interior is mostly original and a true throwback with a very spacious rear seat. As a 500XL this Galaxie had the nicer interior with bucket seats and center console along with polished door panel inserts. The seats and carpet are in good original condition while the headliner has been replaced. Everything works including the radio, heater, backup lights, wipers, and horn. An aftermarket tachometer and oil pressure gauge are also present.
This Ford is a great combination of a rust-free California body, great cosmetics, a fantastic drivetrain, and many new and improved mechanical systems. It is all wrapped up in the spacious, classic design of a 1964 Galaxie. Not to mention it’s a great driving car that is a pleasure to drive. I don’t think you could ask much more from a classic car.
