Seller’s Comments

Pay attention to this one as it is pretty special.  This is a one-owner 1978 Corvette Pace Car with just 4,897 miles since new.  It has extensive documentation and is nicely optioned with features like the more powerful L82 engine, Gymkhana suspension, and CB radio.  It is original and unmolested, even retaining the factory plastic seat covers over the rare leather/cloth bucket seats.  And it includes a fantastic collection of memorabilia that you will not find anywhere else.

1978 was an important year for the Corvette.  It was the 25th anniversary of the model and introduced the fastback body style to the third generation (C3) design.  It was also given the honor of being the pace car for the Indianapolis 500 that year, giving rise to the 6,502 Pace Car edition Corvettes built for 1978.  I don’t think there is a nicer looking third generation Corvette, with its beautiful black and silver paint with red accents.

This example is a genuine Pace Car model with the special 90xxxx VIN number.  It was purchased from Larson Chevrolet in July 1978.  Documentation includes the window sticker, dealer invoice, and dealer inspection sheet.  There is also the purchase contract, sales invoice, odometer statement, and payment receipt.  There is even the original registration slip with matching license plates, still in their sealed envelope from 1978!

The car remains all original right down to the tires.  It even has the original plastic covers on the seats and cardboard information sleeves on the sunvisors.  It is truly a time capsule and reflects a car with fewer than 5k miles.  You would never guess the paint and decals are 41 years old.  Same with the glass t-tops and aluminum wheels.

This Corvette is nicely equipped with power windows, power locks, power steering, and power brakes.  It also has air conditioning, rear window defroster, tilt/telescoping steering wheel, and optional cruise control.  This Pace Car was also ordered wtih the code 15C interior with cloth inserts on the seats and door panels, rather than the more common code 152 all-leather interior.  And of course there is the must-have option of the 70’s: the AM/FM/CB radio.

And no small addition to this offering is the unique collection of memorabilia related to the 1978 Pace Car.  Highlights include a 4-piece luggage set with original shipping boxes, a 1978 Corvette “Action Jacket” with brochures, an unopened Ezra Brooks decanter, and a set of can coolers.  There is a 1978 Pace Car press kit with Indy 500 ticket offer and Indy 500 program.  There are many other brochures, hats, model cars, toy cars, wall hangings, Corvette magazines, newspaper articles, calendars, and more.

This is a special opportunity for any serious Corvette collector.  A low-mileage, one-owner example of the most collectible Corvette of its era.  Desirable factory options.  Preserved original condition with complete documentation.  A matching set of unique memorabilia.  It all makes for quite a package.  And with 1978 Pace Car models reaching new highs, including a $74.8k sale earlier this year, it is a nice investment as well.
