Check out this very affordable 1978 Camaro. It is a factory black 4-speed car with the top-of-the-line LM1 350ci engine and F41 performance suspension, all documented by an original build sheet. Additional visuals like Hurst badging, package tray speakers, and an 8-track with CB radio give this one a real 1970’s vibe as well. And while all those things are nice to have, this one also runs great and is fun to drive.
This Camaro was built at the Los Angeles plant in late April, 1978. It wears an older repaint in its original code 19 black that shows some age but still shines nicely and is free of any cracks or bubbling. The body retains a straight appearance without any waves or ripples despite some quarter panel repairs (always a concern with black paint). The build sheet reveals that the drip rail moldings, side moldings, rocker trim pieces, and D80 rear spoiler were all original equipment on this car. The dark color is nicely accented by the 15” American Racing black chrome wheels with BF Goodrich tires (215/65 front, 275/60 rear).
This example was ordered with the LM1 engine which displaces 350 cubic inches and is topped by a Rochester Quadrajet 4-barrel carburetor. It carried a factory rating of 170 hp and 270 ft-lb. While meager by today’s standards, this was the biggest Camaro engine available in 1978, supplanting the smaller 250 and 305 ci offerings. Note the aftermarket aluminum radiator too. The engine is backed by an M20 4-speed transmission and 3.08 rear end, while the suspension is the somewhat rare F41 package. Other equipment includes power steering and power front disc brakes.
The black vinyl interior is standard Camaro with bucket seats in front and a bench in back. This car is rather unusual in that it was not equipped with the D55 center console; more than 96% of Camaros had this feature in 1978. Note the headliner and driver’s seat cover were replaced in 2025. All gauges and indicators work properly as to the lights, turn signals, horn, wipers, washers, heater / defroster, and parking brake. The vintage AM/FM/CB radio with 8-track and a magnet-mounted trunk antenna was all the rage back then, and this one really looks (and sounds) the part.
This is a pretty neat offering. It represents a road-ready second-generation Camaro that has a great look and a very unique feature set. You just don’t see many documented non-Z28 versions with an LM1 engine, 4-speed transmission, and F41 suspension. And you don’t see many such cars at this price point either.
