Here is a real 138-code Chevelle SS396 that brings a lot to the table. This southern car has seen a frame-off restoration and was refinished in its original color of Cordovan Maroon. It is a fairly rare color that looks great over the Parchment bucket seat interior. But what really makes this one tick are its performance built 396 and 5-speed transmission which offer up plenty of driving excitement.
This Chevelle shows a build date of 07A (early July) which puts it near the end of 1968 production. As you may know, this was the final year for the SS as its own model (rather than an option) with a unique VIN starting in 138, making this era easier to authenticate. This example was built at the Kansas City plant and spent much of its life in Georgia. Be sure to see the underside photos of the clean floors and rockers. It also has a very straight body with great panel gaps and window fitment along with doors that make the perfect sound when closed. The cowl tag shows paint code N (Cordovan Maroon) which is a nice backdrop for the SS trim and white striping. There are new parts throughout; bumpers, trim, emblems, lenses, body mount bushings, seals, fuel tank, brake and fuel lines, etc. The car rolls on 15” Rally wheels with BF Goodrich tires (235/60 front, 235/70 rear).
The engine was built by B&B Racing Engines of Appleton, WI. It uses a correct 3916323 casting (late 1967-68 396ci) along with Edelbrock 6045 aluminum heads, Performer RPM Air Gap intake, and a Bigs 750 carburetor. There is also an MSD digital ignition, Champion aluminum radiator, and headers feeding an X-pipe and Flowmaster mufflers. It sounds like you’d expect from a performance big block. The transmission has been upgraded to a Tremec 5-speed with overdrive for good highway operation. This is followed by a 12-bolt rear end with 3.73 gears along with a TA Performance girdle and Hotchkis suspension. Power steering is present while the hydroboost power brakes use cross-drilled discs and a line lock in front.
The code 794 Parchment interior features dual bucket seats surrounding a center console with a proper 5-speed shift plate. All seat belts are present including front shoulder belts and three rear lap belts. The dashboard has a full set of factory instruments including a ribbon tachometer, though these have been displaced by a digital tachometer / shift light along with aftermarket oil, temperature, and voltage gauges. The speedometer, fuel gauge, lights, turn signals, horn, and parking brake are all functional. So are the heater/defroster and radio with power antenna.
The Chevelle really came into its own with the SS396 package. It helped define the muscle car era and remains one of the most popular offerings of the 1960’s. This real-deal SS combines a remarkably solid car with a ton of work and upgrades to create a great looking Chevelle that represents the brand to its fullest.
