The 4-door Lincoln Continental of the 1960’s is in a class all by itself. No other car can match its combination of prestige, style, luxury, and power. And while coach door designs had been around for decades prior, Lincoln’s execution may be the greatest of them all. This offering brings it all home with its stately design, big V8 power, cold air conditioning, cruise control, and more.
This handsome 1967 model presents a solid, rust-free body with a single repaint in its original color of Aegean Bronze (aka Bronze Metallic). It is a refreshing appearance in a sea of blue, black, red, and white examples. The black vinyl top was also replaced and is in excellent condition. All trim and moldings are present from tip to tail which contributes to a very distinguished look. The wheels have their original covers and wear 235/75R15 white stripe tires from 2015.
Power comes from a 462 cubic inch V8 rated at a robust 340 hp and a whopping 485 ft-lb of torque! But with a curb weight in excess of 5,000 pounds this car puts it all to good use. The drivetrain continues with a Ford C6 automatic transmission, while the beefy rear end houses 2.80 gears for good highway performance. The car also has power steering and power front disc brakes for easy operation. Recent maintenance includes an updated exhaust along with a new a/c compressor, master cylinder, wheel cylinders, and sway bar links.
The black interior with woodgrain trim is a fitting space for such a car. The seat backs have embroidered Lincoln logos while the aluminum instrument panel is reflective of the times. All the basics are present and functional. Of course, that means working headlights, turn signals, gauges, indicators, horn, wipers, washers, and parking brake. But there’s a lot more to talk about on this car. Let’s start with the automatic temperature control (ATC) which incorporates both heat and air conditioning. It works great, just dial in the desired temperature and the 1960’s technology will do the rest! The sound system provides a factory AM radio with 8-track tape player along with a power antenna and aftermarket FM converter. There is also a working factory cruise control for relaxed driving. The vacuum door locks also work, albeit slowly. Other functional items include the power bench seat, glove box light, and all courtesy lights including the individually controlled rear lamps. You won’t find many luxury cars from this era that are so complete.
There have been many interpretations of the suicide-door Lincoln, but this one presents as it did almost 60 years ago. It isn’t slammed to the ground, painted a tri-coat pearl, or rolling on 20” wheels. Rather, it stays true to what makes these cars so enduring all these decades later, without any compromise in aesthetics or ride quality.
