When you hear “1985 Oldsmobile” you might not be very intrigued. However, we have a wonderful Toronado that will likely change your mind. This top-of-the-line Caliente is certainly a classic and includes two build sheets along with an original window sticker showing an MSRP of $22,331 (that’s over $65k in today’s dollars). But beyond its value as a collectible, this automobile can also be driven every day in comfort and style.
This Olds spent time in Texas and Arizona before coming to Wisconsin in 2011. As a 1985 model, it represents the final year for the attractive third generation Toronado and its body-on-frame construction. Everything is in remarkable condition for a 40-year-old vehicle. It has a regal look with its white paint and padded landau roof with stainless crown molding. Some of the exterior Caliente features include deluxe ornamentation, belt moldings, and wire wheel covers which further the car’s distinguished appearance. It also has white line tires from 2021.
Like earlier Toronados, this one continues the tradition of front wheel drive. Power comes from a 5.0L V8 topped by a four-barrel carburetor. Note this the last year you could get a V8 in a Toronado (and many other cars). The 4-speed automatic overdrive transmission allows for easy highway cruising and shifts smoothly with just a slight delay from Drive to Neutral when cold. The power brakes and steering contribute to the ease of driving, while the fully independent suspension helps keep the car nimble around corners.
The interior is stunning! Everything is in amazing condition, again defying the car’s age. The dark oxblood leather with woodgrain accents is a real statement to 1980’s luxury, and the absence of a transmission tunnel makes things very spacious as well. The seats are as comfortable as they look, even in the back. The Caliente package includes automatic air conditioning, dual electric remote mirrors, a leather wrapped steering wheel, and other leather interior trim. Another big item is the digital instrument cluster which was really something in 1985. Additional options include the “Astroroof” electric sunroof ($1,195) and a Delco Bose sound system ($895).
From the Grand National to the IROC-Z, there are plenty of 1980’s GM offerings that seen big increases in value. And while this Toronado might not share the same stage as a $250,000 GNX, it is a very attractive value. There aren’t many classics in this price range that can offer such a luxurious ride and look so good in the process.
