Here is a gorgeous 1966 Corvette convertible with a lot to offer. It was the recipient of a documented frame-off restoration completed in 2017. The rebuilt drivetrain retains its numbers-matching L79 engine, 4-speed transmission, and 3.55 rear end. The body was professionally refinished in its one-year-only color of Mosport Green along with a tan convertible top. And while this Corvette offers plenty of visual excitement, it is also great fun to drive.
This C2 shows a build date of July 5, 1966 and has been with its last owner for almost 30 years. He found it in 1996 at Hawk’s Corvettes in Scottsdale, AZ and proceeded to drive it regularly for many years. By 2013 the mechanicals were getting tired so they were removed and rebuilt. But as these things go, by 2016 it led to a full frame-off effort. The chassis was restored by the owner who had most every part cleaned and powdercoated. The body was redone by Corvette Sports in Sheboygan Falls, WI. Along with any needed body work, the exterior was repainted in the very attractive code 982 Mosport Green which matches the trim tag. A new tan top was also installed. Note this mid-year also comes with an unrestored hardtop that is original to the car. The car was fitted with 15” Rally wheels to suit the owner’s taste (they were not available until 1967).
The 327 ci engine is the car’s numbers-matching HT-code L79 small block which had a factory rating of 350 hp. The stamp pad shows the proper VIN derivative and an assembly date of June 19, 1966. It received a 0.030” overbore and was rebuilt to factory specifications. The heads received hardened valve seats for compatibility with unleaded gasoline, and the distributor points were replaced by a Pertronix module. All ignition shielding remains in place as does the correct Winters intake manifold. The original 4-speed Muncie transmission was also rebuilt and shifts perfectly. The 3.55 rear end is also believed original with a date stamp of June 22, 1966 (Corvette rear ends did not receive a VIN stamp).
Did I mention this car is fun to drive? It starts from the moment you turn the key and hear the rear exit chambered exhaust that sounds like side pipes but is much easier on the driver’s ears. The 4-wheel disc brakes have a power booster for easy operation along with an upgraded dual reservoir master cylinder for safety. And like any car from this era, the power steering makes it much easier to live with at low speeds.
The code 430 dark green vinyl interior was also redone. It gives such a nice look with the Mosport Green exterior, especially when the top is down. The seats, door panels, and carpet were all replaced with new parts. The dashboard was also redone and includes the correct tachometer with a 6,000 rpm redline. Other functional equipment includes the headlights, dash lights, horn, radio, power antenna, wipers, heater/defroster, and parking brake. It even has the correct blinking bulbs for the parking brake and headlight door warning lights. Note the glove box door has been signed by Dean Torrence of Jan and Dean.
This is a quality C2 with fewer than 4,000 miles since being put back on the road. It combines a desirable year, beautiful colors, and great drivetrain into a well restored Corvette that runs as good as it looks. And if you’ve ever been through a classic Corvette restoration then you know it involves a large commitment of time and money, not to mention the cost of the car itself. Save yourself a bundle and start enjoying this beauty today!
