Here is a very cool example of a 1966 Pontiac Tempest sedan that has received plenty of attention over the past few years. With its new paint over the sharp Tempest body lines it has a great look, especially with the upgraded 18” wheels. But it has also seen plenty of mechanical work to keep it in good running and driving condition. You will find power steering and air conditioning as well. If you’re looking for a classic 4-door then this one is worth checking out.
Of course, the Tempest platform was the launching pad for the LeMans and GTO models. The 1966 version is one of the most popular with its stacked headlights, crisp tail section, and Coke-bottle shape which is especially effective on the 4-door variant. This car was completely repainted in 2024 using its original color of Mission Beige which could pass for a contemporary color and is a great choice for the bigger body style. And you can’t miss the 18” Rally II style wheels which really add some pop and wear Cooper 245/45 tires all around. Note there is some tire rub in front if you hit a bump while turning. The underside is in very good condition as well; be sure to see the pictures.
Power comes from the original 326 cubic inch 2-barrel. Along with a general tune-up, recent maintenance has included a replacement carburetor and rear main seal. It cruises nicely down the road and has a great sound through the dual exhaust. The Super Turbine 300 2-speed automatic transmission (similar to a Powerglide) was rebuilt in 2016 and works perfectly. The power steering requires little effort and makes the car easy for anyone to drive. Additional work includes turning all four brake drums and installing new wheel cylinders and hoses. The car also received new steel fuel lines and brake lines.
The Fawn interior has an attractive look. The two-tone bench seats are done in vinyl with cloth inserts front and rear. The door panels, headliner, and rubber floor are all in very good condition too. The dashboard has four round pods, same as a GTO. Here too everything looks good. It has integrated heat and defrost controls along with a dealer-installed underdash air conditioning unit that has been converted to R420A (which is very effective in old R12 systems). It is an old system but still works. The horn, wipers, lights, turn signals, and parking brake all work properly too. Also present and functional is the original AM radio.
These classic 4-door sedans really are a super deal. You get the look and style of a desirable 1960’s car but with a back seat that people can actually use. All for a fraction of the price of a coupe. I’d say this one makes a pretty strong case.
