If you’ve been looking for an exceptional LT1 Corvette then your search may be over. This documented 1972 model has a lot to offer with its wonderful condition and numbers-matching drivetrain, not to mention a ride that feels as good as new. It really brings out the best of the early C3 platform and shows just how enjoyable these Corvettes can be.
This example was built for the Canadian market and comes with its GM Canada documentation along with the original tank sticker. These documents show an LT1 model produced on 1-28-72 in Classic White with a Saddle Vinyl interior. Options of note include power steering, power brakes, power windows, tilt / telescoping column, and a rear defroster. In 2015 this Corvette was purchased from Canada by its last owner and imported into the United States. Note it has a clear Wisconsin title.
This car previously received a great deal of refurbishment work. This included new paint and a new interior along with a myriad of other work. It looks fantastic; the color combination has a classy look and seems to accentuate the sharp lines of the C3. The paint really shows well and does not exhibit any stress cracking. The chrome bumpers are in wonderful condition as are all the trim and emblems. A luggage rack has been fitted too. Of course, as a T-top coupe with a removable rear window, you can also have open-air driving.
The drivetrain starts with the numbers-matching 350ci solid lifter LT1. Along with the correct VIN derivative, the block shows an engine plant stamping of V1220CKY (December 20) which is spot-on for an LT1 Corvette built in January. Everything appears stock with the exception of a set of headers. The M21 4-speed transmission also shows the proper VIN derivative and a transmission plant stamping of P2T22B (December 22). The factory rear and is an AB-code 3.70 setup with Positraction. The car fires right up and is easy to drive with its power steering and power 4-wheel disc brakes. It really is like driving a new car in 1972; the steering is tight, the brakes feel great, and there aren’t a bunch of annoying squeaks and rattles. Note the upgraded clutch assembly does require a little more effort than stock.
The Saddle interior is the perfect companion to the white exterior. The bucket seats have been redone along with the carpet and door panels. The dash and gauges have also been reconditioned. A great option on any C3 is the tilt / telescoping steering column which can really help with ingress / egress, while the power windows are nice to have as well. The headlights, wipers, and vacuum doors all function properly through both the regular switches and the vacuum breakers under the steering column. All gauges work as do the horn, heater, defroster, vents, turn signals, backup lights, dash lights, courtesy lights, and parking brake. However, the alarm and rear defroster are non-functional. Finally, this Corvette retains its original backdrive / reverse lockout mechanism whereby the car must be in reverse to remove the key.
This 1972 model represents the last of the C3 glory years. It marked the end of the LT1 performance package and was also the last year for full chrome bumpers. Further, subsequent years lost many of the design’s unique features and saw power levels succumb to emission restrictions and inferior gasoline. This desirable LT1 is in great condition, looks terrific, has its original drivetrain, and includes proper documentation. It makes for a great investment in a classic Corvette that will also deliver a lot of fun to its next owner.
