Talk about an eye catcher! This 1953 Buick Super Riviera wears a few custom touches that have turned it into a truly beautiful automobile. While still unmistakable as a Buick, it is now sleeker and more refined than when it left the factory. And with a lot of recent maintenance, it is also ready for the road.
This project started with a solid, rust-free automobile. The body received several modifications starting with a 1956 Packard tail section that not only looks right at home but also gives a lot more style than the stock offering. Even the bumper exhaust was carried over! The car was also nosed and decked to continue the “smooth” theme, while the door handles were replaced with 1948 Lincoln buttons. All work was professionally done and integrates well with the original design.
Atop the metal work is an attractive light green and white paint scheme. The car really wears the colors well, especially with all the great chrome and stainless trim. It has also been lowered and shod with 15” Coker Classic wide whitewalls that tie into the roof color. Note the Cadillac wheel covers too.
This Buick retains its original 322ci engine. 1953 was the first year for Buick’s “Fireball” V8, more commonly known as the Nailhead. The heads were resurfaced in 2023 and many engine gaskets replaced as well. The Dynaflow automatic transmission was rebuilt in 2024. It also received a new transmission cooler and torque tube seals. Additional mechanical work included replacing both the steering box and master cylinder. An electric fuel pump and a new battery were also installed.
The interior has a two-tone theme that blends well with the exterior. The front and rear seats have new cushions and upholstery for improved comfort and a fresh look that still resembles the original code 50 trim package. The dashboard looks amazing; it’s hard to believe it’s more than 70 years old! And there’s no mistaking that generous Buick steering wheel. All the factory gauges and indicators work properly as does the added third brake light. The wipers, horn, heater, and parking brake are all functional too. The factory radio remains, but the sound system now uses a modern underdash AM/FM/CD stereo.
This car genuinely has a look all its own with tons of character throughout. It offers a nice ride and draws lots of attention no matter where you go. After seeing this one, you will never look at a 1953 Buick the same way again.
